Everything You Should Know About Ticks In Plymouth

|

In Plymouth, ticks are most active during the summer months, but you can find them anytime from April until October. These small bugs may look like insects but are an arachnid. However, unlike other arachnids, they don't eat insects; instead, they only feed off the blood of mammals. If a tick chooses to bite you, it could leave more than just an irritating bug bite on your skin. It could cause you to seek medical attention.

At Combat Pest Control, we know the common habits and behaviors of the many ticks species in this area. Here is a look at everything you should know about ticks and how a Plymouth pest control company can help to keep you safe.

The Types Of Ticks In Plymouth

There are over 800 different types of ticks in the world. Fortunately, not all of them live in Plymouth. Some of the various tick species that you are likely to see in this area include:

  • Dog tick: This tick gets its name because it is found on dogs more often than humans. This tick is extremely small when unfed and only measures around 3/16 of an inch. However, when it is full of blood, its brown and white body can swell to be around 5/8 of an inch big.
  • Blacklegged tick: This tick is commonly referred to as the "deer tick" because it is frequently found on white-tailed deer. They usually have an orangish-brown body and black legs.
  • Lone Star tick: These ticks are about 1/4 of an inch big and have reddish-brown bodies. The female lone star tick has a bright white dot on its back, and both male and female ticks will turn gray and swell and look like a small, round ball.

The ticks in this area like to hang out in grassy areas with plenty of shade. They can usually crawl on you and bite you without you even realizing it.

The Diseases Ticks Are Capable Of Spreading

Throughout a tick's life, it will drink the blood of several different animals. If they bite an animal that is infected with a disease, they will also become infected with the disease. When the infected tick bites you, it can transmit the dangerous disease to you. Some of the most common types of illnesses that people catch from a tick bite include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and the Heartland virus.

When a tick bites you, it will embed its head in your skin and inject a small amount of saliva as it eats. The longer a tick stays attached to you, the more likely you will catch whatever disease it has.

Five Handy Tips To Protect Yourself From Tick Bites

Some of the things that you can do to protect yourself and your property from ticks include:

  1. Don't let your grass get too tall
  2. Keep bushes and other vegetation cut back from your house
  3. Put flea and tick preventative treatments on your pet
  4. Make sure that you keep a close on your pet when they are outside and don't let them walk in tall grass
  5. Wear long-sleeved shirts when outside

It is also a good idea to wear tick repellant when outdoors. Also, avoid spending too much time in shaded areas and check yourself for ticks after you are outdoors.
