Most consumer products (flea bombs, sprays, and collars) are designed to kill adult fleas. That accounts for roughly 5 percent of the flea population in an infested home at any given time. The other 95 percent, the eggs, larvae, and pupae developing in carpet fibers and furniture seams, are left entirely untouched.
The pupal stage is where most DIY attempts fall apart. Inside its cocoon, the developing flea is chemically resistant to nearly all consumer insecticides. It can stay dormant for weeks or months, waiting for warmth and vibration before emerging as a biting adult. A flea bomb fills a room with product, and the pupae simply wait it out. When the product dissipates and you walk back in, the vibration from your footsteps often triggers that dormant population to hatch all at once. This is why people sometimes report a surge of bites a week or two after treatment rather than relief.
There’s also a numbers problem. A single adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, and those eggs aren’t sticky. They fall off the pet onto carpet, flooring, and upholstered furniture within hours of being laid. It just slows the adult end while the rest of the population develops undisturbed.

Effective flea control requires three things happening simultaneously: treating the pet, treating the interior environment, and treating the outdoor areas where fleas are breeding. Most homeowners address one, sometimes two. Leaving any front untreated means the population reseeds from that direction almost immediately.
Flea foggers and bombs are the most common single-front approach, and they have a fundamental mechanical limitation. They disperse product in a horizontal cloud through open air, but carpet fibers, floor cracks, furniture cushion seams, and the spaces beneath baseboards are where flea eggs and larvae actually live. Those spaces are sheltered from a fogger’s reach. The product lands on the surface. The fleas are underneath it.
The outdoor reinfestation loop is the part most homeowners don’t anticipate. Wildlife (squirrels, raccoons, and opossums) move through South Shore yards carrying fleas, depositing eggs in shaded resting spots: beneath decks, along fence lines, in the mulched areas where pets tend to lie down.
